Cities of Northern Sardinia: Olbia, Alghero and Sassari

Olbia, Alghero and Sassari, the three main cities of Northern Sardinia, differ in terms of traditions, history, culture and dialects.
All of them are beautiful and represent the diverse landscape of this part of the island.

Olbia

The city of Olbia is the capital of Gallura and the main gateway to the famous Costa Smeralda.
The island of Tavolara stands out in its gulf, a spectacular limestone peak rising steeply from the sea and, for the people of Olbia and beyond, a symbol of the town since time immemorial. It is the perfect spot for spectacular excursions, swimming in the crystal-clear sea and underwater exploration.

The name Olbia derives from the Greek ‘Olbios’, meaning ‘happy city’: and it truly is a cheerful and lively little town, with its brand-new seafront promenade overlooking a splendid gulf, surrounded by stunning natural beauty and a delight to visit at any time of year.

Olbia is the perfect base for exploring the whole of the marvellous surrounding area: a collection of breathtaking beaches, among the most beautiful in Sardegna, and stunning unspoilt natural scenery.
You’ll also be enchanted by the charming hamlets of San Pantaleo and Porto Rotondo, and by the various archaeological sites that bear witness to its ancient history.

Olbia is also a ‘City of Wine’, thanks to the many local grape varieties that produce Vermentino di Gallura DOCG, and a ‘City of Mussels’, boasting a very important tradition in this regard.
We also recommend trying the many delicious dishes of the Gallura culinary tradition.

Alghero

Alghero, also known as ‘Little Barcelona
’, is a real gem of Northern Sardinia.

Amidst the imposing ramparts, the picturesque alleyways of the town centre and the marvellous monuments, you’ll recognise all the hallmarks of Catalan culture, which has shaped this town. Even the locals speak Catalan, and the Spanish spirit is still very much alive and evident.
The natural surroundings will take your breath away: stunning beaches and cliffs offering breathtaking views.

We recommend three of the many things to do in Alghero:

  • A WALK ALONG THE RAMPARTS

Each rampart is dedicated to the great navigators of the past (Columbus, Marco Polo, Pigafetta and Magellan).
The Genoese and Catalan-Aragonese walls and fortifications have remained virtually intact, bearing witness to the city’s glorious past.

  • PORTO CONTE PARK

A regional park stretching across 5,000 hectares of Alghero’s coastline and hinterland.

  • THE CAVES OF NEPTUNE

The Caves of Neptune are one of the most fascinating places in the entire Mediterranean. Don’t miss the chance to visit the caves and discover a breathtaking landscape, entirely shaped by the power of nature.

This is where the first university in Sardegna was founded, and where great politicians and presidents of the Italian Republic lived and studied.
A culturally vibrant city that loves music, brimming with events all year round.
But it’s not just about culture: the countryside surrounding the city also offers stunning landscapes to explore.
