The Garibaldi Museum in Caprera: a glimpse into Italian history and culture

compendio garibaldino caprera
The Garibaldi Museum in Caprera
is the first museum in Italy to be dedicated to a historical figure.
Giuseppe Garibaldi
, known as the Hero of Two Worlds
, is renowned throughout the world for his heroic deeds: he was a patriot, a warrior and a great statesman.
The Hero of Two Worlds – so called because he fought in both Europe and South America – led the famous Expedition of the Thousand
, which paved the way for the unification of Italy.
He died in Caprera
in 1882, and it is here, on the island of Northern Sardinia – where his descendants also live – that the hero continues to be remembered and his values and exploits passed on to anyone lucky enough to visit the Garibaldi Museums
.

At the Garibaldi Museum in Caprera, you can visit:

  • The White House, which was the hero’s home from 1856 to 1882, where visitors can fully immerse themselves in the private life of this fascinating 19th-century figure.
  • The Memorial, a significant exhibition comprising works and documents that trace Garibaldi’s exploits around the world. From Forte Arbucci, home to the Memorial, you can enjoy a splendid view of the La Maddalena archipelago.
