Ozieri
is an elegant little town with a glorious past, rich in history and culture
.
It is the most important town in Logudoro
, a historic region in central Northern Sardinia, and possesses a charm just waiting to be discovered.
Its history dates back to prehistoric times
: the San Michele Caves
are, in fact, the birthplace of what is considered the first major Sardinian culture, the ‘San Michele Civilisation’ or ‘Culture of Ozieri’.
It is a town that preserves a rich legacy of Romanesque art, featuring the majestic Basilica of Sant’Antioco di Bisarcio
, which stands on the Chilivani plain, and the imposing Roman bridge Pont’Ezzu,
with its six arches and a length of 90 metres.
The historic centre
of Ozieri, with its neoclassical influence, is of outstanding architectural and aesthetic value. Its distinctive feature is its amphitheatre-like
layout, with a network of elegant narrow streets, gardens, terraced squares and splendid 19th-century loggias.
Ozieri’s food and wine scene
is also well worth exploring: the famous ‘pane fino’ bread, ‘sospiri’, ‘copulete’ and the numerous varieties of wine from its vineyards. Amongst these, the Alvarega is particularly noteworthy, a wine historically produced by local noble families.
Ozieri is a town that knows how to pamper its visitors with unique culinary delights. Among the most celebrated local specialities is the ‘Spianata di Ozieri’, a traditional bread that is the perfect accompaniment to a wide range of toppings, from savoury Sardinian sausage to fresh ricotta, offering an explosion of flavours with every bite.

As well as the Spianata, the “Copulettas” deserve a special mention. They are a traditional dessert from Ozieri, now renowned throughout the region, but traditionally prepared for special occasions such as weddings.

During your visit to Ozieri, you’ll have plenty of opportunities to sample the region’s excellent food and wine in the local restaurants and trattorias.
