Our Lady of Castro
is situated five kilometres from Oschiri, in the direction of Lake Coghinas. The building is of Romanesque origin, with Lombard influences. Some sources believe it was commissioned by Mariano I, judge of Torres in the 11th century
, and is closely linked to the Church of Our Lady of the Kingdom of Ardara
, which is very similar in style. Other sources suggest that the building dates from the
12th century
and is therefore linked to the cathedral of Sant’Antioco in Bisarcio
. Its name derives from its proximity to a Roman fort, known as the Castrum
. The façade, built of pink trachyte and
adorned with an imposing bell gable, reveals stunning colours in the sunlight. Not far away, on the lakeshore, you can visit the ruins of the medieval castle of Castro
. The church is well known and much loved by local residents, who regard it as an
important place of pilgrimage
