
The municipality of Berchidda lies at the heart of Gallura, perched on the slopes of This small village is immersed in the colours and scents of nature: splendid granite rocks, forests of holm oaks and ancient oaks, streams and waterfalls. The area is home to numerous species, including deer and mouflon, and is graced by the sight of eagles and sparrowhawks soaring overhead.
There are numerous traces of prehistory: domus de Janas, dolmens and megalithic structures, nuraghi and giants’ tombs.
Later, Berchidda was contested by ‘Romanised’ peoples and rebellious tribes, of whom many traces remain. In the 11th century, Montacuto Castle was built, a witness to numerous medieval events, of which the walls, a tower and a cistern remain.
Berchidda’s fame has grown worldwide thanks to a jazz festival that is increasingly acclaimed on the international stage: the famous Time in Jazz.
Created at the behest of the renowned trumpeter Paolo Fresu, Time in Jazz takes place every year during the week of Ferragosto. During those days, the village comes alive with colours, sounds and musicians from all over the world.
It is in the vineyards of the municipality of Berchidda, in Sardegna, that Vermentino di Gallura is produced – the world’s only Vermentino DOCG, a true masterpiece.
