The Basilica of Sant’Antioco in Bisarcio is situated in the municipality of Ozieri, in the Northern Sardinia, and stands as a marvellous example of medieval architecture on the island.
The church is situated in a magnificent setting, overlooking the plain of Ozieri. Once you arrive in the square in front of the building, we recommend taking a moment to admire the splendid panorama that surrounds it, consisting of green, peaceful hills rich in pastures. It was the seat of the Diocese of Bisarchium, documented from 1065 to 1503.
Indeed, in the Middle Ages, Bisarcio was a thriving cultural and religious centre, and the basilica formed part of a complex of buildings, including the bishop’s palace and the rectory.
Unfortunately, all that remains of these structures today are the ruins and the charm of imagining the basilica complex as it once was. You can admire the beauty of the basilica’s interior: it features a wooden roof in the centre and cross vaults on the sides, with a classic three-nave layout.
The footprints you can see inside the church were left by pilgrims, who carved a sandal-shaped symbol into the stone to mark their visit.
If you continue your journey towards the town of Ozieri, you’ll discover a beautiful little town steeped in history and culture.
The town, with its beautiful palaces, churches and archaeological sites, bears witness to the history of this part of Sardegna, from antiquity to the present day.
